For those looking for guided access to the James rather than independent exploration, look no further! Below is a monthly list of all educational and recreational activities put on by various agencies in the Richmond area. Each event has a descriptions are and  links to an agency's website are provided when available.

Recurring Events

 

  • Sundays, 10:00am-11:00am; Adopt-A-Highway Litter Pickup @ Qualla Road

Friends of Pocahontas State Park- Frequent clean-ups keep our section of Qualla Road looking good, and it doesn't take a lot of time.Bring your own gloves.Bags and safety vests are provided. Contact number: 717-321-6116

 

  • Mondays, 5:00pm-7:00pm; Invasive Plants Control @ Pocahontas State Park

RVAMore- Park staff needs help controlling invasive plants in the park. We may be weeding or pruning or uprooting plants, so bring appropriate tools if you have them. Bring gloves, plus water and snack for break-time.

 

  • Tuesdays 5:30pm-7:00pm; Salamander Salutations @ Forest Hill Park

James River Park System- Home on the James unites with James River Park to bring you Salamander Salutations, an evening of Park, Body and Mind exploration!

 

  • Tuesdays 5:30pm-8:00pm; WMR Ride Like a Girl Beginner Mountain Bike Ride @ Historic Tredegar

RVAMore- This event repeats every Tuesday! We will work on getting used to our bikes and the trails both in the dark and the light. Helmets are required. Let's get in the woods and have some fun!

 

  • Wednesdays & Fridays 7am-8am; Trail Run @ Reedy Creek Visitors Center

James River Park System- Explore the Main Area of James River Park when the warm weather’s at its best- early in the morning. All fitness and ability levels are welcome for these conversation-paced trail runs.

 

  • Wednesdays 5:45pm-8:15pm; WMR Ride Like a Girl Bike Hash @ Stone Brewery

  • Thursdays 5pm-8pm; Intro to Whitewater Kayaking @ Pony Pasture

James River Park System- Sign up to learn the fundamentals of this sport in a fun environment with a low instructor to student ratio, so you’ll get plenty of individual instruction. We’ll provide any equipment that you don’t have yourself. Be sure to wear clothes and sturdy shoes that can all get wet. Minimum age of 14; maximum weight limit of 200 lbs; must be a confident swimmer. Class size is limited to 8 participants, so sign up early! $25 a session; $90 four sessions

 

  • Thursdays 8:30am-11:30am; Wood Stocking @ Pocahontas State Park

Friends of Pocahontas State Park- Every Thursday we stock the campground with fresh firewood. If we have extra time we may split some too! Keeping the parks campers supplied with lots of split firewood not only protects the park from invasive pests but also generates thousands of dollars which can be reinvested in the park. No experience required!

 

  • Thursdays 9:00am-11:00am; Landscape Gardening @ Pocahontas State Park

Friends of Pocahontas State Park- There are several landscaping gardens in Pocahontas that need some TLC. We can do some weeding and some planting and help make the park attractive for both park visitors and our resident fauna.

 

  • Saturdays , 8:30am-11:30am; Woodsplitting @ Pocahontas State Park

Friends of Pocahontas State Park- Keeping park campers supplied with lots of split firewood not only protects the park from invasive pests but also generates thousands of dollars which can be reinvested in the park. No experience required!! Plus all of the hours accumulate toward free park passes and other rewards.

Frinds of James River Parks- Our board meetings are open to the public. Please join us each month. friends@jamesriverpark.org

 

  • Friday, August 5, 8:00pm-9:30pm; Owl Prowl @ Pony Pasture

James RIver Park System- Search for owls using audio playback.  Learn to identify Virginia owls by sight and song.  Please bring a flashlight!

 

  • Saturday, August 6, 10:00am-1:00pm; Belle Isle Hike @ Tredegar Parking Area

James River Park System- Join us for a family friendly hike to one of Richmond’s historic gems, Belle Isle. Learn about the geologic and human history of the area and the role Richmond played in the development of our nation. Please bring water, a snack and good shoes.

 

  • Saturday, August 6, 1:00pm-4:00pm; Frog’s Eye Tour @ Reedy Creek Visitors Center

James River Park System- Swim Snorkel and Hike across many of the braided islands near the Reedy Creek Visitor Center for a unique view of the park! Fun for all ages! Snorkels, masks, and PFD's provided.  Please bring close toed shoes, a water bottle, and a lunch if you would like to picnic!

 

  • Friday/Saturday, August 12-13, Overnight @ Reedy Creek Visitors Center

James River Park System- After a scenic and challenging road ride along the Virginia Capital Trail, we'll camp under the stars at Chickahominy State Park and watch the Perseid Meteor Shower. At it's peak, we can expect to see between 60 and 100 meteors per hour during the Perseids. We'll return to the city on our bikes the following morning.  3:00pm departure on Friday afternoon. We'll return to Richmond on Saturday afternoon. $40 includes food for two days and transportation of your belongings to the campground, plus vehicle support in case of emergency. camping fees for Chickahominy State Park.

  • Tuesday, August 16, 6:30pm-9:30pm; Friends of Pocahontas State Park Monthly Meeting @ Pocahontas State Park

Friends of Pocahontas State Park- Every month the FOPSP executive, volunteers and park staff meet to discuss and plan upcoming events, projects, initiatives and purchases. Attending is a great way to get involved and learn more about the park and its activities.

 

  • Saturday, August 27, 12:00am-3:00pm; Paddle and Potluck Picnic @ Huguenot Flatwater

James River Park System- Canoe the flatwater stretches of the Upper James River. Swim, snorkel and share delicious treats in a secret location! Please bring water and a picnic dish to share, and .
